Key West in the Florida Keys

Kayaking tours - photo by Roboneal.comkAt the end of an enchanted chain of coral rock islands is Key West. Just a mere 130 miles from Miami, FL is the tiny two mile by four mile island of Key West. The water surrounding Key West is where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Gulf of Mexico. Key West has not always been a slice of paradise though, but in the last decade the city has grown to be a prime destination for all walks of life. Key West is a friendly place and its long-time residents are free spirits with a relaxed attitude.

Slowing Down

If your first visit to Key West is not convincing enough then maybe the island life is not for you. Island life is not exactly on time or on schedule for a reason and if you can go with the flow you will love our island. The beauty of Key West lies in down the quiet lanes of Old Town, in the smiles of the people you meet and in the sweet smell of the sea air that whisks across the island every day.

Living in Old Town Key West gives residents a great option - to not own a car. Bicycles and mopeds are a preferred way to move around town. If a car is a must just be aware that parking is difficult in Old Town. There are several parking lots and garages that help alleviate the problem to a degree.

Old Town Key West is exactly what it says it is, older than the rest of the island. This section of Key West was where the first settlements were made. The eastern end of the island was actually filled in to create what we know now as New Town Key West. Old Town is dotted with beautiful homes of all shapes and sizes. From Conch (pronounced 'konk') homes to Victorian-style historic homes, Key West architecture has evolved into a style all its own. Key West Things To Do

Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas - photo by Roboneal.comTourism is our biggest industry in the Florida Keys these days. There's plenty to do on the water and in town to occupy adults and children. From fishing charters, snorkeling, diving and kayaking to tours of Ernest Hemingway's house and the Truman Little White House, Key West has great history. A visit to the Dry Tortugas and Fort Jefferson is a must. This beautiful national park is 70 miles from Key West and is accessible by seaplane or boat.
